Richmond, BC
With a live audience of 1100 guests and over 100 media in attendance, PRP Creative Events celebrated the one-year countdown to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games by producing a spectacular televised event live from the Richmond Olympic Oval.
With a cast of more than 450 performers, Countdown 2010 featured an array of entertainment: Musqueam First Nations performers opened the celebration with their traditional Welcome Song and a 150-member children’s choir from Coastal Sound Academy provided a rousing rendition of O Canada along with award-winning Prince George soloist, Danielle Faulkner.
Junior national figure skaters, courtesy of The BC Centre of Excellence, and speed skaters from the Richmond Rockets took to the ice in an emotional blend of theatre and sport that epitomizes the spirit and unity of the Olympics. Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, formally invited the athletes of the world to gather in Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Award winning dancers along with Vancouver 2010 mascots, Miga, Quatchi and Sumi exploded on stage proving that we will all have Fun in 2010. Throughout the celebration, past, present and future Olympians, which included gold medalists Cindy Klassen and Simon Whitfield, were on hand for the excitement.
As the world anxiously awaits the start of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Countdown 2010 culminated at 6:00pm with BC Premier Gordon Campbell and future Olympian Julia Murray leading the countdown.
“It is exciting to know that one year from now, the entire world will gather in Vancouver and Whistler to celebrate the many achievements of these athletes,” said PRP’s President & Creative Director, Patrick Roberge. “Having recently been named Producer of the Paralympics Opening & Closing Ceremonies, we are delighted to be part of yet another 2010 Olympic Experience."
